Nakagawa Mokkougei – April 2013
Nakagawa Mokkougei – April 2013
Dog bed
This sleek dog bed is based on the shape and construction of traditional Japanese wooden containers. Master craftsman Shuji Nakagawa used traditional joinery techniques to craft it, assembling pieces of Japanese umbrella pine into a smooth oval shape without using any nails. Nakagawa’s design forms a wooden shell with room for cushions and blankets to be placed inside.
The collection
Shuji’s Precious Wood collection is an assortment of sleek vessels based on the shape and construction of traditional Japanese wooden containers. Classic designs, such as ricecontainers, miso canisters and water buckets were developed more than 500 years ago, and have been in continuous use ever since. Older still are the joinery techniques used to craft them, which assemble pieces of wood into smooth round vessels without using a single nail.
